Arabic students drive away their blues by smoking
A recent survey has proved that almost half of Arabian students smoke. Also, it has been proved that this habit is high practiced by adolescents from rich families. It was interviewed 1,050 students of aged between 18 and 26 in Jeddah and Riyadh cities.
Study conducted in Riyadh revealed that 44 percent of male medical students interviewed in the capital smoked sheesha and 32.3 percent smoked cigarettes. The most interesting is that almost all (90 percent) of interviewees said that they aware of the link between smoking and heart diseases.
75 percent realize that smoking is also responsible for strokes.Abu Salman, an English teacher at a government school, supposed that such high percentage of smoking is due to a list of factors as, high incomes of the families and the family environment.
Salman said that Arabic men used to visit the Istirahas- places located at the outskirts of cities where they spend the whole night chatting, playing cards and smoking sheesha.Consequently, their women or wives remain alone at home.
“Under such circumstances, it is but natural for them to feel depressed,” he said. “They drive away their blues by smoking.”
Another factor that persuades to smoke is nonobservance of family values.
“When a girl receives step-motherly treatment at home, it is natural for her to feel depressed. This is one of the reasons why women become chain smokers at a young age,” he said.
