Art smoking
Daily, in entire world, smoking ban won larger and larger areas. Except for bars, restaurants, streets and parks, anon it arrived till the world of beauty where magnificence entities are re-born and get style - theatre. Here, cigarette ban equivalent to: usage of tobacco in theatre and onstage.
Nevertheless, smoking veto heartily affected life and creation of some plays.
The most affected region where play-houses suffered from new cigarette forbid was state Colorado. Three theatres companies – from Denver: “Curios Theater Company” and “Paragon Theater”, from Boulder “Theater 13” was sued to state. As they mentioned “smoking on stage is a form of free expression”. It is hard to act plays ,especially, that written in old style where smoking is one of key “decoration”, as “A man of no importance”, by Terrence McNally, which take place in Dublin pub where smoke is the primary expression of that time. Other examples of tobacco acting are “Wirginia Woolf” or “Match”.
The cigarette ban for play-houses isn’t so strict to all states. For example, in Ireland and England is allowed smoking of herbal cigarettes (it didn’t contain tobacco and are used as cig’ substitute). In New York actors can smoke lighted cigarettes, but if they would like a real one, they must to apply for a waiver from the city.
In 2005, Abbie M. Strassler, manager of Broadway, for “The Odd Couple” decided to apply for waiver. All the process lasted four months and she called this procedure “absurd”.
An alternative way in resolution of anti-cigarette usage found Theatre 13. In staging of “Match” was used herbal tobacco. “We put up signage, it’s written in the programs, and then we make an announcement before the show. We give people four or five chances every step of the way to make their own decision. If they walk out of the room, we’ll give them a full refund.” said Judson Webb, one of the company’ s founding members. During 10 stages, nobody of theatre’ guests did this.
The actors as well don’t fully agree with anti-usage of tobacco during the cigarettes onstage. For example, Mooly Ringwald which in real life is a nonsmoker, said about her role in “Cabaret”:”At that time every woman who’s cutting edge, a little bit fashionable, unconventional, is going to smoke, and that’s Sally Bowles and this whole thing that I do lasts all of 10 seconds, and the theaters that we’re playing are so huge that it’s not really affecting anyone so much except for me.”
