New amendments for smokers
Tobacco Products Control Amendment Bill has introduced new modifications to previous legislation that government believes is “exploited by the tobacco industry”. It is presupposed that the new bill will make previous legislation more complete and successful.
As it is known smoking is prohibited in public places. New amendments accentuated that as public places were classified as areas close to windows, ventilation inlets, doorways or entrances to public places. Those who will not respect the bill are obliged to pay fine- R500.
Good news is what smoking is not totally banned. As minister says smoking is permitted in a prescribed portion in public space.
New bill also forbids “misleading labeling” on cigarette packs, including words such as “light” and “mild”. It was placed a veto on these signs because the report confused message, as cigarettes that contain these signs are less harmful for health.
New amendments were introduced for workplaces too. First of all, employers can freely object to smoking in their workplace without retaliation and may not be exposed to smoking. Also, employers can refuse a job where smoking is permitted.
Fine applied for those who will not respect the amendment is gigantic. It will be more “cheaper” for smokers not to light up within working areas where non-smokers are. Fine is up to R100000. Agree it is an incredible amount.
It is projected to introduce an additional bill that will oblige to place graphic health warnings on all cigarette packs.
