The health risks and hazardous effects of regular chain-smoking have been examined and proven a long time ago; however, the dangers of light smoking have not been investigated and analyzed. Nevertheless, the scientists have recently eliminated that mistake by drawing up a profile of average American "lights cigarettes " smoker after having carried out various surveys and investigations. The study lead by a group of independent experts is focused on polling and examining almost 10,000 on-and-off or occasional smokers that make up one-fifth of all the smokers throughout the nation according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The results of that study were published in the latest issue of American Journal of Public Health. Among statistical data cited in the study are the following facts that are rather interesting from the psychological point of view:
According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention scientist, the latter survey was fulfilled in an attempt to estimate adequately the trend of tobacco usage across the United States. The research showed that the health officials should not disregard the enormous number of light smokers who are mainly younger adults and middle-aged people, because the tendency to become intermittent smoker is growing very fast and could become a major threat in the nearest future. The scientist added that they Public Health authorities should immediately take corresponding measures in order to prevent the expansion of light smoking “epidemic”. The idea to draw up a research focused on young people who tend to smoke not more than 10 cigarettes a day and do not smoke every day was firstly introduced at the 2005 Congress of health experts and scientists. The American Legacy Foundation scientists paid the attention of their colleagues on the fact that the major part of all the performed smoking researches was oriented one heavy smoking and its consequences. Moreover, the majority of smoking cessation programs was as well directed at regular chain smokers. American Public Health Association spokesperson stated that the recently published study has been the first step in the struggle against the growing popularity of light smoking. Public Health Department should do their best to adequately estimate the problem of light smoking and find the most effective ways to overcome it, since the number of light smokers has been growing continuously.
